Book: The Coke machine

Is Coke “The drink that represses” or “The drink that refreshes”? I recently read The Coke machine: the dirty truth behind the world’s favorite soft drink. It is a very interesting recount of the history of the global icon, even the parts it doesn’t want anyone to hear. It is well worth the read.

The book covers the company from its early days as a patent medicine like Snake Oil, to its iconic rise in American pop culture, its global expansion, the competitions with Pepsi, to its link to obesity, to its support for terrorist paramilitary organizations, and environmental devastation it causes.

Each of the intertwined stories is well researched and well presented. The only weakness of the book was the end lacked the power to make a greater impression — though it does let the reader draw the conclusions from the assortment of stories.

My rating: 8/10
